Gesamtergebnis: Leere Bewertungen ausnehmen

Aggregation: Exclude empty grades

Goals:

This guide shows which calculation methods are available for empty grades and how this can change the overall result of the course.

Difficulty: easy
Valid from Moodle version 4.3

Open Gradebook setup

To edit the setup of the grades, first open "Grades" in the course and then select "Gradebook setup" from the drop-down menu.

Open the settings of the category

In this view, you can now see all activities that generate points for the course.

By default, there is a top-level course category for calculating the overall result. If you have many grade items in the course, you can also manage this calculation in a separate category. How to add your own categories is described in the guide "Grades: add categories".

In our example, we would like to adjust the calculation of the result of the "Exercises" category. To do this, click on the three dots ("Cell actions") in the row of the category in the "Actions" column and then select "Edit category" from the drop-down menu.

Note: The "Status" column always shows which calculation method has been selected. In this example, "Natural" and "Exclude empty grades" were selected.

Exclude empty grades

The "Exclude empty grades" parameter can be used to control whether unrated or unsubmitted grade items should be ignored or automatically rated with 0 points.

The setting "Exclude empty grades" is activated by default. Decide whether you want to leave this parameter activated or deactivate it. Then click on "Save".

Depending on the calculation method, activating or deactivating this setting has an influence on the overall result. Examples of this are shown in the next step.

Check effects

To check the effects, select the "Grader report" option from the drop down menu at the top left.

In our example, the student has only completed one assignment. This example is used to show how the "Exclude empty grades" parameter affects the grades:

Exclude empty grades - activated: Assignments that have not been completed should not be taken into account when calculating the overall result.

In our example, only assignment 4 is taken into account when calculating the overall result, as the empty grades are excluded. Therefore, only the 5 possible points for completing the task are used to calculate the overall result. This corresponds to 100%, which results in a very good score.

Exclude empty evaluations - deactivated: Assignments that have not been completed should also be awarded with 0 points.

In the example, task 4 is given 5 points and tasks 1-3 are given 0 points to calculate the overall result. A total of 5 points out of 20 possible points were achieved. This corresponds to 25%, which results in a negative score.
